Student housing topic at Central Park meeting

Association President Jerry Rule said he met with UM-Flint Chancellor Ruth Person and Vice-Chancellor Mary Jo Sekelsky to discuss Central Park as a neighborhood for students. Person is concerned that if a safe, clean neighborhood is not available for student housing, students will transfer to other universities.
A resident said he was concerned the neighborhood will become a “college ghetto.” He said he did not want the partying, drinking and noise often found in off-campus student neighborhoods.
Rule assured the group there will be no fraternity or sorority houses in the neighborhood.
“We’re going to get the students whether we want them or not,” Rule said.
Representatives from the university will meet with Rule to discuss the issues.
Rule also discussed the need for the neighborhood to develop a master plan to access money coming to the city through the federal stimulus package.
