Court Street group discusses Central

The College and Cultural Neighborhood Association May 21 discussed plans for Central High School, Gilkey Creek, neighborhood cleanups and gardens.
In a letter to the Board of Education about Central High School, the group asked the board to talk about various options for the building instead of immediately dismissing ideas. There is hope that the building will be renovated to keep its historical integrity.
The group has been cooperating with adjacent neighborhood groups on the future of Central.
Member Mike Keeler said that the Flint Board of Education has claimed to be $20 million in debt but is actually $32 million in debt. Closing Central High School, without allowing another group to use the building, will cause the loss of additional Flint jobs, he added.
Member Jim Richardson told the Board of Education, “Just talk to people. Powers doesn’t have to be the one to buy it. Just put something in there.”
Jack Minore, city council candidate, said, “In terms of neighborhood, having Powers in the city is absolutely critical. I think we should be busting down the Flint Board of Education’s doors.”
An estimated $27 million is needed to renovate Central High School.
Volunteers cleaned Gilkey Creek for the second year and it was tested. It was found that conditions have improved — although the official test results were not available yet.
A neighborhood clean up and gardening is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. June 13 and July 11. Claudia Mach said the grant submitted to Keep Genesee County Beautiful was denied.
Mach, a member of the Applewood Initiative for Gardening and Community, said that victory and vegetable gardens are becoming more popular because of the economy.
“People are becoming more aware of the health and economic advantages,” she said.
Groups including the Ruth Mott Foundation, Genesee County Land Bank, Applewood Initiative, and Michigan State University Extension are supporting urban gardening meetings in June and July.
In other action, candidates for mayor and Flint City Council spoke to the group.
Brenda Clack, mayoral candidate said, “This city is primed to explode. We’re down, but we’re about to explode. I’m here offering my very best to make sure this city moves ahead.”
Dayne Walling, mayoral candidate said, “I’m in this to do this job and I have a deep belief in all of you. We can again become a great community.”
City Council Candidate Minore said, “I’m not in it for a job or a paycheck, I don’t need one. I have a record of proven leadership, a commitment to Flint and a commitment to service.”
City Council Candidate Denise Smith-Allen said, “It’s my belief that Flint is coming up. There’s a rebound and I want to be a part of that.”
City Council Candidate Dale Weighill described his goal of bringing nonprofit organizations closer to city government and said, “I’m running because I think we need new leadership on a new city council. When you have a city that’s struggling with revenues you need to think ahead.”
