Deteriorated properties, improving neighborhood topics at Mott Park

The Mott Park Neighborhood Association April 11 discussed deteriorated properties and efforts to improve the neighborhood.

Guest speakers from the Genesee County Land Bank and the Flint River Watershed Coalition talked about how their organizations are improving the local landscape and President Chris Monk announced two recent beautification grants.

Heidi Phaneuf, Genesee County Land Bank community resource planner, talked about the $10 million Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 funds that are targeted for rehabilitating city properties — including those in Mott Park.

"Eligible activities that qualify for funds include acquisition of abandoned, vacant and foreclosed residential properties, rehabilitation of those properties, new housing construction, demolition of blighted properties and holding properties for future residential redevelopment while maintaining them," Phaneuf explained.

"We've had to refocus our target areas in Mott Park because of unexpected additional properties becoming eligible in the 2011 tax foreclosures," Phaneuf said.

While money for six properties in Mott Park has been appropriated, a task force committee will be formed to identify specific housing selected for rehabilitation work, Phaneuf said.

Sue Lossing, Flint River Watershed Coalition education and outreach coordinator, explained how volunteers could make a difference in protecting and preserving the Flint River watershed.

"Storm water runoff is a major source of pollution to our watershed," Lossing said.

She described a seven-step program to clean up storm water by practicing good car care, fertilizing sparingly, cleaning up after pets, saving water, properly disposing of chemicals, keeping pollution out of storm drains and choosing earth-friendly landscaping.

Lossing invited members to join in the Friends of the Flint River Trail cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon April 30.

"Last year we had over 400 volunteers. This year we're aiming for 500," Lossing said.

President Chris Monk said the group received a $1,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to build a shed to store supplies for the association's events. Monk also announced a $1,000 grant from Keep Genesee County Beautiful for upgrading the grounds and flowerbeds at the Mott Park Golf Course Clubhouse.

In other matters, Diana Phillips reported members are forming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit group called the Mott Park Golf Course Association. She said the committee met with Mayor Dayne Walling to inform him that the group wants to take over the course and run it.

Councilman Sheldon Neely (Ward 3) said the Kettering police officers are on the job.

"The city has committed $79,000 to fund the officers," Neely said.

According to Neely, a program to repair sidewalks using federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds is in place. Homeowners with hazardous sidewalk fractures were instructed to call his office to file an application for repair.

Neely also said a new Michigan State Police ministation is in the works for the west side of Flint.

A neighbor cleanup date is scheduled for May 21.

The next bimonthly general meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 6.
