Mott Park Golf Course getting new ownership

Councilman Sheldon Neeley (Ward 6) told the Mott Park Neighborhood Association Feb. 6 the Mott Park Golf Course will soon be turned over to the Mott Park Golf Course Association, a neighborhood nonprofit formed last year, to take the course out of the city's control and give it to the neighborhood.

"This is great news," Neeley said. "The Mott Park Golf Course is the nucleus of the neighborhood. Great things can happen there — food vendors on the deck, weddings on the bridge and partnerships with McLaren Hospital and Kettering University. It's a magnet for our community."

Neeley said he expects Emergency Manager Mike Brown to seal the deal with the association in the coming weeks and the course to reopen before 2013.

Neeley asked the group to think about questions to ask the emergency manager at the 6th Ward meeting at 5:30 p.m. March 1 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1309 Ballenger Highway, espescially about the options for the city's water supply.

"We need to take a closer look at our own water infrastructure which recently reported a 30-percent leakage. Ask the emergency manager to fix the leaks," Neeley said.

According to Neeley, the proposed Karegnondi Water Pipeline to replace the Detroit pipeline would cost an estimated $628 million.

"Remember this," Neeley cautioned. "Corruption follows money."

"There is another option," Neeley continued. "We need to look at the Flint River as an alternative, not just a temporary alternative as proposed by Howard Croft, recently appointed director of infrastructure and development for the city."

Diana Phillips, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Kettering University, said she supports using the Flint River as a permanent water source.

"The Karegnondi Newsletter is misleading about the benefits of the proposed pipeline," Phillips said. "There is no guarantee that even one laborer hired for the pipeline will be from Michigan."

The Flint River water supply appears to be the best permanent choice, according to Phillips, because all jobs for updating the water treatment plant and infrastructure would be local. This would be a savings over the Karegnondi pipeline which she estimated as $124 million.

Neeley also encouraged members to get answers from the emergency manager about the future of Genesee Towers.

"It's your building now, you paid for it with your taxes," he said.

Neeley reported recent neighborhood improvements, including the Sunset Avenue walking trail, the Chevy-in-the-Hole bridge and the opening of the Kettering gateway.

"The bad news is criminal activity has increased in the ward," Neeley said. "Crime is like a malignant cancer. We need it stopped. Kettering University has contributed $300,000 each year for added police presence and we benefit from that partnership. Ask the emergency manager what he plans on doing about crime."

Karen West, program director for Keep Genesee County Beautiful (KGCB), encouraged members to continue creating beauty through action.

West encouraged the group to think about  adopting a block to pick up litter on a regular basis.

"Think about an adopt-a-block program where volunteers clean up specific areas," West said.

Materials for a neighborhood cleanup are available at the KGCB office in the rear of Woodside Church, 1509 E. Court St., she said.

Graffiti prevention was another area where volunteers can make a difference, West said. Her organization is working with a new product that will be used on graffiti-prone telephone curb boxes.

"This is a clear substance that enables us to wash away the graffiti," West said.

West invited members to attend the 2012 Community Beautification Leadership Conference from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. March 3 at the UM-Flint Harding Mott University Center.
