South Side group discusses housing assessment, new business group

Heidi Phaneuf, Genesee County Land Bank community resource planner, talked to the South Side Business and Resident Association meeting March 20 about taking an inventory of housing and business conditions on the South Side.
"The city's new chief planner, Megan Hunter, is going to ask all neighborhoods to do a housing and commercial assessment," Phaneuf said. "There will be training sessions beginning in April to teach volunteers how to do a team inventory."
According to Phaneuf, a driver and two volunteers drive by each structure and rate it as good, fair, poor or demo. When each block is complete the information is recorded on a neighborhood map that produces a picture of each blighted area. Volunteers will not be required to walk.
A number of members volunteered. Phaneuf said they would be notified about training dates.
She said Habitat for Humanity will be given the neighborhood maps to help assess new construction opportunities.
Art Wenzlaff reported a new South Side group is being formed.
"As you know, the city of Flint is undergoing severe financial difficulties. There is a need to generate more business revenue from existing and new businesses. At the February meeting it was suggested the South Side business community form an alliance to discuss current problems and marketing strategies to stimulate business. The first meeting will be March 21 at Diplomat Pharmacy," Wenzlaff said.

Sgt. Sergio Thomas of the South Side Task Force reported crime in the area is stabilizing.
A number of traffic stops made by the task force has significantly reduced the number of weapons and crime statistics are falling, Thomas said.
The group is concerned that the task force's grant funding which ends in September will not be renewed.
A letter was hand-delivered to Genesee Prosecutor David Leyton asking about additional funding sources.
David Caswell told the group he was concerned that only 13 members are signed onto the Code Red crime watch program. He provided members with an information sheet and card explaining that anyone with a telephone can join and become the eyes and ears of the Flint Police.
Caswell also reported on the candidates running for the 68th District Court saying, "this is the people's court." He advocated members become familiar with the four candidates as the court's actions play a vital role in the community.
The next meeting will be 1:30 p.m. April 28 at the International Academy, 2820 S. Saginaw St.
