Fairfield Village discusses safety options

The Fairfield Village Neighborhood Council April 7 discussed safety issues and heard from Judge Herman Marble, 68th District Court, and Pam Nelson, Genesee Health Plan.
President Andy Ellard emphasized the safety committee is not a patrolling group, but the eyes and ears of the police.
"Our safety watch is based on the premise of watching. We cannot pursue anyone anywhere under any circumstances." Ellard said.
Ellard cited the recent problems in Florida where a neighborhood watch member pursued a "suspicious person."
"I cringe at the notion that anyone with a weapon is following another person," Ellard added.
Sgt. Lloyd Nicholson, the Mott Community College Safety Department, explained crime watch members should call 911 and then call the Mott police if they observe suspicious activity.
Marable suggested another way citizens could help reduce crime was to show up in court for the sentencing.
According to Marable, the sentence often includes community service when a person is found guilty of a crime.
"I use community service as a sanction instead of fines. I try to assign the offender to an area where the crime was perpetrated. The city no longer has a community service officer, so I work with the Citizen's Nuisance Task Force," Marable explained.
He reported that the city council recently passed a tough ordinance aimed at metal thieves. Although the crime is not a felony, it is a misdemeanor and offenders will go to jail.
"The ordinance calls for a flat 90 days in jail," Marable said.
Pam Nelson said the Genesee Health Plan, that has provided health care for uninsured adults for 10 years, is supported by a millage that will be on the November ballot for renewal.
"The plan is funded through federal, state and local funds," Nelson said.
According to Nelson, any county resident who meets citizenship and income requirements, is between the ages of 19 and 64 and is not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid is qualified for the plan.
Mammograms, preventive screenings and emergency dental pain services are also covered under the plan.

The group received a draft of the newly developed Fairfield Village Neighborhood Plan for 2012 to 2017.
The plan identified values and visions of the neighborhood, its history and characteristics and a detailed housing assessment. The challenges and strategies for each priority were identified.
Judy Hovey, who worked with Vice President Claude Miller in the development of the plan, said when the document is finished it would be available for other neighborhood groups to refer to.
Hovey reported a $500 grant application was submitted to Keep Genesee County Beautiful to plant trees in areas where trees had been removed.
The group set June 23 as the date for the annual Unity Picnic.
The group will meet next at 1 p.m. May 5 at the Court Street Village Neighborhood House, 727 East St.
