Fairfield Village discusses neighborhood survey

Fairfield Village Neighborhood Council meeting May 5 discussed developing a "quality of life" survey for their 235 residents for the city's master planning process.
Judy Hovey, secretary for the organization and a member of the city's master planning citizen's steering committee, told members she supports the survey and recommended offering respondents an opportunity to win a gift certificate with the completion of the questionnaire.
The group discussed distributing the survey by July.
Hovey recommended a community meeting be held around Labor Day to discuss the results of the survey. She distributed a sample survey developed by the Flint River Corridor Association and recommended the group consider additional questions specific to Fairfield Village.
The sample survey asked participants to rate the housing, transportation infrastructure, parks and recreation amenities and retail and commercial opportunities in the neighborhood.
"We can use the data we collect to strengthen our neighborhood plan," Hovey added. "This will say to potential grant funders that we've done our homework."
Kevin Schronce, city associate planner, said his group is also working on a survey for the neighborhoods.
"A lot of organization are doing similar work," Schronce said. "We want to identify what each group is doing and streamline the information into the master plan."
Schronce distributed a list of frequently asked questions about the master plan — what it is, what it contains and why it's being created. He said the information is also available on the city's planning newly created website, www.steeringflintforward.com.
"Our main goal at this time is to complete a housing inventory," Schronce said. "We want every neighborhood updated and we need volunteers to help us."
Hovey announced the group received a $500 grant from Keep Genesee County Beautiful for tree replanting. She also recommended the group submit an application to the land bank to adopt the lot at the corner of Seventh and Lapeer where a recent demolition took place.
