College Cultural Association meets with crime watch

The College Cultural Neighborhood Association and the College Cultural Neighborhood Crime Watch met June 21 in the MCC Regional Technology Center.
The neighborhood association met to address the articles of incorporation that affect volunteer liability. The group voted unanimously to amend their articles of incorporation to include volunteers who serve at the new crime watch station.
The group also agreed to send a letter requesting the Genesee County Land Bank to hold recently foreclosed properties in their area from auctions, offering them for sale locally rather than risk an open auction sale.
According to Mike Keeler, vice president of the association, the land bank-owned properties would have a better chance of becoming locally owned which would be better than an absentee landlord purchasing them at auction.
Keeler announced the suspension of the recycling program at the end of June because the county will no longer service the recycling trailer. Keeler said he is working with former CBC owner, Stephanie Reischling, to put in place another type of program. Keeler also said, according to city officials, a recycling program was included in the budget for the next fiscal year.
"I'm not holding my breath," Keeler said.
He said he would continue to look for other recycling options for the group.
President Sherry Hayden announced that the 20th anniversary of the association would be marked this year with a birthday bash at the group's crime watch station from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 18.
The group adjourned and the watch group meeting followed.
Co-chairman Craig Wolcott reported a second break-in attempt at a residence that had previously been robbed. Two residents on patrol that evening had detailed descriptions of the offenders which led to their arrests. Several members attended the court proceedings and encouraged others to appear in court when there is a case about neighborhood crime.
Jack Minore suggested residents be careful when discarding boxes from newly purchased equipment and TVs. He said would-be robbers look for evidence of newly purchased large screen TVs and other valuables on trash days.
Wolcott reported two new projects in the city. He said Neighbors without Borders and President's Roll Call are two organizations dealing with crime. At its recent meeting, the president's group set three goals — blight, party stores and guns — which it will develop citywide strategies to deal with.
The group discussed ways to deal with party store owners in a non-adversary way. The group also recognized that often the menace takes place in the parking lot of the party store.
Stephanie Diana reported work on the association's web site is challenging. She said the process has been slow but residents now are able to file a report that will go directly to the association's crime watch station.
Diana also reported progress getting both tenants and landlords to participate in the association.
Crime watch Co-chairman Mike Herriman updated the group on the crime watch station. A new alarm system is slated to be installed along with a surveillance system in the parking lot. Residents can report suspicious activity by calling (810) 208-9645.
Herriman also noted that participants in the patrol program recently witnessed an armed robber and alerted the neighborhood using Red Alert after calling 911.
Wolcott said he would send out a schedule for the station with open volunteer slots. Residents can also check the group's Facebook page for more information on the station.
David Livingston, MCC public safety officer, told the group his department is available for emergency calls after calling 911. Livingston said all the MCC safety officers are sworn and certified police officers.
