Mary Alice Stickney, co-chairperson, said the Tuesday night youth basketball program at Williams-Edison School is a success. The school approved expanding the program on Thursdays, but more volunteers are needed.
Vicky Hurley, co-chairperson, said she needs technical help to write a grant for funds from the Neighborhood Violence Prevention Collaborative to plant gardens at Homedale and Williams-Edison schools. Hurley said the group got a grant to run a summer youth lawn service. The group plans to continue the lawn service next spring.
Guest speaker Flint Policeman Darnell Carr told the group about the Police Activities League which plans to open activity and education centers throughout Flint. He also told the group about the Citizens Police Academy where any adult can be trained free of charge to be a Flint Police Department volunteer.
The group welcomed new members Dave and Suzanne Tuttle. He said he hopes to train people to maintain their homes and she said she plans to use her gardening skills on various neighborhood projects.
The group will meet next at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at St. Mary's Church, 2600 N. Franklin Ave. Call 232-5383 or 233-4698 for details.
