Downtown group discusses vandalized parking meters

"We are working to get control of the city's downtown parking meters by the first of the year. Once we get control, we plan to replace the meters with modern ones that are much more secure," said James Rutherford, Downtown Development Authority president.
Several members had complained that the majority of the meters are vandalized and that many coin boxes or entire meters had been stolen.
Rutherford said the city will still be in charge of parking enforcement.
There is a program to give money to local businesses to improve their buildings or to develop their capacity to do business, according to Joel Rash, representing the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
The matching grant program is funded by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). Grants are available to non-profit groups and to some businesses that service or are located in mixed income neighborhoods where MSHDA has existing or proposed investment.
The purpose of the program is to fund economic development in those neighborhoods and help the groups serve the community.
The annual car cruise in downtown Flint was very successful last August, said Jerry Preston.
"We hope to have 1,000 cars participate next year," he added.
Preston said the cruise will be on the same day as the Woodward car cruise in Detroit to encourage participation. But, the Flint Jazz Festival will not be held during the same weekend because the festival committee thinks the two events are incompatible.
