Metawanenee wants to be historic district

The district would include the Cook School building, 500 Welch Blvd., built in 1917, as well as a number of significant homes and sites.
Freeman Greer, a member of the American Institute of Architects 150 Project, delivered a letter about the proposed designation to the Historic District Commission Feb. 7.
Greer said the letter asked the Historic District Commission to send a resolution to Flint City Council requesting the historic district be established. The council would establish a study committee to write a report about the proposed district, which would then go to the state of Michigan for review.
Greer, who recently went through a similar process to approve the Stockton Center, 720 Ann Arbor St., said it may take up to a year for the entire process to be completed and the historic district to be designated.
Members of the Metawanenee Hills Neighborhood Association, according to Greer, support the idea because it will bring additional attention to their neighborhood.
He said that the neighborhood association is very active in promoting the neighborhood and that historic designation could be used for both increased marketability and as a planning tool for the neighborhood's future. He said he was not aware of any resident opposing the plan, despite the new exterior remodeling guidelines associated with living in an historic district.
Most of the houses in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s and 1930s, according to Greer, but he said it is a unique neighborhood in Flint's history.
The project is an outgrowth of master planning for an American Institute of Architects 150th anniversary project encompassing the neighborhood from Welch Boulevard to Martin Luther King, Fifth and Chevrolet Avenues.
The project, which received an initial $7,500 grant for master planning, will plan for the Whaley Children's Center and Metawanenee Hills and introduce a prototype low-cost housing in the area.
