Roundtable group targets best practices

Marian Barrera Young, president of the Neighborhood Associations of Michigan (NAM), was the featured speaker at the Neighborhood Roundtable meeting May 19. Young challenged the group to get involved and resolve their problems by first identifying, then prioritizing and finally by discovering ways to resolve them.
NAM is a statewide organization of neighborhood associations with a plan to educate, empower and advocate for community members to upgrade their quality of life and to improve their communities.
"The purpose of today's discussion is to look at current issues that are plaguing your neighborhoods. We'll collect this information so we can address your issues in a community conference scheduled for Flint in 2013," Young said.
David Price, NAM vice president and Fairfield Village Council vice president, introduced Young to the focus groups and urged members to provide her with information aimed at curriculum development for the 2013 conference.
Some of the concerns focus groups reported were violence and crime from drug related activities; school issues including bullying and gangs; and public safety issues.
According to Young, the issues may sound insurmountable, but they are resolvable.
"A 92 year-old-woman in Harlem changed her block one house at a time by telling drug-dealers to 'take it off this block,'" Young said.
Other best practices observed were positive parental and peer influence.
"Find out what the assets are in your neighborhood and begin bartering," Young advised. "Maybe you've got a nurse on your block who can help an elderly resident, or perhaps you've got seniors who would love to read to children. Pick a place and start working," Young advised.
NAM provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas holding a yearly statewide conference and promotes cooperation among neighborhood organizations by providing technical assistance and grants to neighborhood associations.
