Group recommends rezoning for auction

The Flint Planning Commission May 8 recommended that the emergency manager approve a zoning request for an auction and internet sales facility on James P. Cole Boulevard. The group also discussed changes in the sign ordinance moratorium.
The group approved a request to rezone 2851 James P. Cole Blvd. from G (heavy manufacturing) district to E (heavy commercial, limited manufacturing) district limiting the use to a live auction and internet sales facility and all other uses permitted by right and special conditional uses in the E district.
Architect Dan Grillo said that the business wants to move from Ortonville to Flint because there is more space for equipment and vehicles.
Grillo said the items will be housed both inside and outside and that land shared with a GM site has already been leveled to make room for heavy outdoor vehicles. The land will have screening and an electric fence.
Grillo said that auctions are held online from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays. Live auctions are held four to six times a year, mainly of court-ordered repossessions, houses and heavy construction equipment.
Mayor Dayne Walling said that the owners worked closely with the staff in getting this business into the corridor in hopes of more jobs and businesses moving into that area.
The group discussed additions to the sign moratorium, including exemptions on sign repairs in which breakdowns on digital signs are not affected and gas stations that want to use digital signs for prices and sales are not affected.
Zoning Administrator Sheree Pearce said that a public hearing is not needed because no ordinance is involved.
The group will meet next at 6 p.m. June 12, June 26 and July 10 in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. Call (810) 766-7355 for details.
