State trooper talks to business group

Sarah Whitman, Michigan State Police community service trooper, told the East Side Business Association June 20 about the State Police programs in Flint. Whitman replaced Trooper Scott Nichols who recently retired.
Whitman said the state police have three squads of five troopers and one sergeant working 12-hour shifts in Flint.
"We use data-driven information to place our troopers in high crime and high traffic violation areas because we know the two are related," Nichols said.
She said her troopers take at least two to eight guns off the street each weekend during routine traffic stops.
"That's what saves lives — some shootings didn't happen," Whitman said.
The grim statistics Whitman presented showed a high number of aggravated assaults occurring on Saturday night and Sunday mornings. Statistics also provide murder rape and robbery stats and the time and day of the week the incidents occur.
"The information comes from police reports people file and 911 calls. That's why it's so important to call 911. File the report for a home invasion even if you don't think police will come to the scene. We need to know where these crimes are happening," Whitman said.
A state police helicopter requested by Gov. Rick Snyder will be stationed in Flint to provide a quicker response to crime than a vehicle.
The governor is concerned about the number of violent crimes in Flint, Whitman said. She said a fugitive team — four more state troopers, will soon come to Flint to aid in the arrest of known fugitives.
Whitman also discusses the lack of jail space and prosecutor resources that allow newly arrested fugitives to go back on the street.
"It's extremely frustrating for me to appear before a judge and see the offender get six month's probation for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. It's frustrating to see the same people being charges a second time, but because the first case has yet to make it through the court system, the person goes before the judge as if it were his first offense," Whitman said.
"Get with your state representatives or go to the attorney general's office and tell them you cannot tolerate this any longer," Whitman urged the group.
When Whitman was asked if the state police will become involved with Flint police detective bureau, she said they will be working with Flint detectives in a partnership arrangement beginning July 1.
When asked what could be done to reduce the large number of aggravated assaults, Whitman said domestic violence is very high and recommended the education system and churches address basic principles like what is right and what is wrong.
