Crime plagues neighborhood store

Johns' Mini Mart, 714 E. Second St., has been the scene of two break-ins and a robbery since a new owner took over three months ago.
Owner Johnny Alyateem says that he is concerned about the troubles that have plagued his store in the past few weeks.
Four males with shotguns held up his store April 15 and took cigarettes, Alyateem's wallet, keys and leather jacket and about $1,000 in cash. Alyateem said that it was an unforgettable experience.
Also, his store was broken into after he closed May 19 and May 29. The steel gate and glass at the store's entrance were damaged.
"I believe that it was probably the same person or group of people both times because the damage was similar in both break-ins," said Alyateem.
Alyateem is taking some precautions, including installing a night alarm and a video surveillance system, but he feels that crime is a threat to both his business and to his personal safety.
"I have been thinking about selling," said Alyateem. "It is a nice neighborhood, but I am not sure how safe it is for me to do business here."
