Variance granted for oversize sign

The board granted a variance to allow a 36-square-foot sign advertising Motor City Builders to remain at 2501 S. Saginaw St. After a 12-square-foot sign was added to a 24-square-foot sign, the structure was 4 square feet larger than allowed. The sign is in the public right-of-way in a D-6 (general and highway commercial service) district.
According to Frank McCarthy of Flint Sign and Design, the builder, "I wrote down the wrong dimensions."
He immediately notified his client and the city when he discovered the error, McCarthy added.
"Their decision saved me $1,200," McCarthy said after the ZBA granted the variance.
The board denied Sam Cole a variance to sell fruit, vegetables, plants, clothing and fireworks outdoors at 2215 N. Saginaw St. in a D-2 (neighborhood business) district.
After being told that selling produce outdoors required other government permits, Coles admitted: "It's really the fireworks I'm interested in now. If the other things come up I'll be licensed to do it."
In other action, the board postponed a request to allow a billboard advertising Flint Auto Collision to remain at 1428 W. Court St.
The ZBA will meet next at 6 p.m. July 18 in the city council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. Call 766-7355 for details.
