ZBA denies permit for pawn shop

In opposing the use variance for the pawn shop in the former Good Times Bar, 6420 Clio Road, in a D-3 (neighborhood business) district, ZBA member Fred Marshall (Ward 1) said that there are already to many pawn shops in the area.
Pawn shops, first allowed as a "special regulated use" in D-4 commercial districts, were prohibited in D-3 districts in 1991.
The board again tabled a request from Consumers Power Company for a use variance to allow wood pallets to be stored in an A-2 (single-family residential) district northeast of the intersection of East Boulevard and the C&O Railroad tracks.
According to James Feahr, Consumers Power field representative, the company wants to prevent power interruptions caused by fires by making it possible for the Flint Wood Company to move its pallet storage area near power lines west of the railroad tracks to land Consumers owns east of the tracks.
A request from Berry Wright to use a billboard at 1428 W. Court St. to advertise Flint Auto Collision was dropped.
In other matters, the Flint City Council appointed Sandra Phillips (Ward 3) and James Patton (Ward 4) to fill board vacancies.
