Opinion: Longway Park playground needs repairs

The playground in Longway Park that the students from Potter School play on needs emergency repairs. Every swing is broken or missing, there is a hole in the plastic slide and the climbing wall, a picnic table is missing a bench and top (with exposed sharp metal corners), there is profane graffiti on all of the equipment and the mulch is all missing. In addition, the playground is filled with trash.
School starts in less than two weeks (Sept. 5). The children are not safe. This situation leaves the school and the city in danger of being responsible for the injury of a child and a potential lawsuit.
Something must be done and in the next two weeks. For the safety of my children and yours, we must demand that this equipment is fixed. I am copying this message to Mayor Dayne Walling, City Councilman Joshua Freeman, City Parks Director Pat Gerace, other city officials and the local press.
I may be going overboard on this, but I have been asking all summer to have this park and playground repaired. I walked the park with the Flint parks director in the spring and he said it would be fixed. It looks the same to me. If the city can get the equipment repaired I will personally clean up the trash and paint over the graffiti.
Please call or e-mail Walling, Freeman and Gerace and tell them we need swings, mulch and the dangerous equipment removed.
