Poetry: To an African Basenji

running in his sleep,
he still pursues the lion,
lopes through grasses after deer;
barkless, stepping high
his only sound his neck gourd
shuffling pebbles as he goes
from year to year.
Awake now, nodding in the light
he still sees jungle hearths, or
head cocked, hears a bird scream
in the dark; or taking food, he shakes it roughly
loosening vermin from his ration
that might have clung despite the AKC
through generations; or coming to my call,
he lifts his head into my palm to take
my benediction.
Silent joy, perhaps when someday
you have crossed again into
that Congo dark and I have
followed, I shall hear that
tiny gourd around your neck
and see the grasses part,
and falling on my knees
where warm wind blows
will feel the benediction
of your nose.
