The Flint Planning Commission Jan. 12 approved site plans for expansion of a lobby and emergency room at Hurley Medical Center and to move the entrance to the south side near Dort Park.

At the Jan. 26 meeting, it recommended that the Flint City Council vacate Stone Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

Architect Jim Spore said Hurley, which has three different entrances at Begole and Stone streets, will reassign parking areas with new construction on Sixth Avenue to raise it to lobby level.

Spore said that among the reassignment of parking areas, there will be barrier-free parking on Grand Traverse and that the right-of-way at Stone Street will be vacated. As for the exterior, each entrance will have a canopy and a mixture of brick and tinted glass with new signage will improve visibility from the street.

Spore also said that a green area with walking paths and call boxes will be built near the lobby.

Asked about utilities, Spore said that the utilities are aging and that construction will be complicated.

Site plans were approved contingent on Hurley getting approval for construction near Dort Park from the Dort family.

At the Jan. 26 meeting, the group approved the vacation of Stone Street. Spore said that the street will be vacated and will have no parking on the street because it will be the private property of Hurley. Spore said that Sixth Avenue will be elevated to lobby level.

The group will meet next at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 and March 9 in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. Call 766-7355 for details.
