Planning Commission discusses medical marijuana

Print

The Flint Planning Commission June 28 discussed a proposed ordinance for medical marijuana and approved site plans for an addition at a business at South Center Road.

The group discussed a proposed ordinance on medical marijuana. Members noted that there were numerous proposed regulations that pushed dispensaries and compassion care centers out of an area, such as one that put them 500 feet away from schools, churches and other dispensaries.

One proposal was to put dispensaries in their own special use district. Another was to allow them in industrial areas where factories used to be. Another proposal was to inspect the facilities each year.

However, one concern is that the ordinance may not meet the deadline by the moratorium imposed by Flint City Council to prevent the dispensaries and compassion care centers from being grandfathered in as legal non-conforming uses when the ordinance is passed.

Site plans were approved for a business at 408 S. Center Rd.

Applicant Gib McLoud said the addition is needed for expansion of a business that makes T-shirts and signs. It has been remodeled with new doors and fire exits.

The group will meet next at 6 p.m. July 12, July 26 and Aug. 9 in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, 1101 S. Saginaw St. Call (810) 766-7355 for details.
