Poetry: Regress
By Rita Heidtman Feb 2010
Little girls with afro puffs
Pedal down
in pretend purple convertibles
Down to downtown
in a city divided by chalk lines
drawn clear and defined
to the road they must go
Limitations based on race
as they're racing down the sidewalk
While "men" decide their fate
And their little feet keep pedaling
Pushing
In a race to give them face
Without definition
Of color
Without a heavy burden
Carried on young shoulders
Without the need of sudden regression
To lead to a certain progression
They silently serve as leaders
Front runners
For us to embrace
Their mental state
