Poetry: Now that year has turned

Print

Now that the year had turned,
the days will lengthen,
birds return, the sun will brighten,
warm and fine; all things move
in their good time;
and yet the dregs of dark
remain.

How is it that the lilac lives,
when even its perfume's asleep,
or toads in burrows, frozen, deep
still breathe?

It's true that all things change in time,
and yet in spite of tears,
we know that winter's dark will clear,
and April's lilacs
re-appear.
